November 21, 2022 Mt. Baker Rock & Gem Club general meeting minutes and potluck info/sign-up.

7:04 PM – meeting called to order by club President Candi Gerard.

Secretary Report: Minutes from 11/07 Board Meeting approved

Treasurer Report: Deb went over income and expenses for flyers, rubber stamp, rent, website, books, mileage, tumblers, and Halloween candy.

Membership: 7+ new members. (Welcome Jessica and Edgar who joined at the meeting!)

Mineral Council report: Blanchard Mt. was the last event of the season. Things pick up again in 2023. Upcoming American Federation and Northwest Federation Gem & Mineral Show August 3–6, 2023, Billings, MT. (Dates confirmed via https://billingsgemclub.com/rock-shows/2023-show)

Lapidary Report: things have been steady. 

2023 Show: March 25 & 26. Current focus is advertising; thanks for helping us spread the word!

Vote for 2023 Board – went over volunteers,does the club accept?

The club unanimously voted yes to the above, and the new board will be installed in December for the 2023 term. 

Our next meeting is Monday, December 19, 2022. This will be our holiday gathering, as a club we voted to have a gift exchange and potluck. Attire: Wear whatever you are comfortable in. If you want to participate in the gift exchange, bring a gift, if not, don’t.

Coffee duties will be taken care of by volunteer Harold while Kathy & Kevin are away. Thanks for stepping in to help Harold!

Friendly reminder: intro classes, wire-wrapping classes, lap room time must be paid for in advance (at the Mall Store) to participate. If unpaid, a spot may be forfeited in the event of too many people signed up. Please provide receipts and make sure to get phone numbers!

6:02 pm Meeting called to order by President Candi Gerard at Portal Creek Park Clubhouse. Attending: Michael, Sharon, Ralph, Bonnie, Gordy, Candi, Wes, Deb, Todd, Trevor

Secretary Report: N/A

Treasurer’s Report (Deb): Supplies were purchased; books, lightbulbs, frame for store. Books were recently audited and passed with flying colors. Covered dues, donations, lap room, club sales, rent.

Membership (Wes): 1 new member, lots of renewals in October. Welcome packages for new members were mentioned, what to include – tumbled stones, etc? Inquiry – do we have business cards for the club? No, but we provide brochures. Speaking of which, a new box of 1000 brochures needs folding. Thanks for volunteers!

Mineral Council / Federation (Michael): Last mineral field trip of the year, Blanchard Mt. cancelled due to weather. Olivine dig is also unable to be rescheduled due to weather. Season has ended. Overall lapidary club membership across the US is down due to COVID and lack of funds. Kalispell, MT club cannot find tumblers or parts. Main show for Pac NW in Billings, MT 8/1-8/3 in 2023.

Discussion about the expense of the printed publication most of us received – is there a way to go paperless? Who gets the mailer – all club members, or only board? Will inquire at next general meeting.

Lap Room (Gordy): Walt has been helping out (thanks Walt!) need some grit & belts for the equipment. Thank you everyone for the consistency with collecting payments, documenting names & numbers in corresponding composition books. Oil was discussed – bio oil vs. mineral oil, cost and wear/tear. Oil needs to be changed in saws after the holidays. In favor of bio if it passes the “smell check.”

Discussion about new vendors, scheduling, busy season. Could use help on weekends, and evenings. Flexibility is key.

2023 SHOW (Wes): dates are set, confirmed for March 25 & 26, 2023.

Mall Report (Ralph): Celebrated 2 year anniversary 11/3/22. We are seeing success with new memberships, classes, use of lap room. Canadians are returning to the mall. Anticipating holiday rush. No big news about status of “the mall” in general, but there was recently a security meeting for all tenants.

Deb (Treasurer): mentioned letter from Brookefield RE: proof of insurance. Discussed “key holder” report.

Rock Rendezvous date 2023: October 21, 2023

Todd – WWU scholarship deadline in February. Discussion about a possible weekend field trip. 

UPCOMING: club will take vote at next general meeting for new board members. Facilities: Kevin & Kathy will be gone in AZ, will need assistance with coffee set up, tear down, and storage. 

Vice President Bonnie proposed a sweater theme for the next meeting. 

President Candi brought up a suggestion from Walt about a hold-harmless / liability waiver for use of lap room. Board agrees we should move forward with the form.
New Business: Critters / painted rocks… time to get started for March show. Painted rocks are needed. Volunteers are welcome! (Deb): Need to update names on the WECI bank account. Discussed mileage rate of $.625/ mile. President motioned for a vote, vote passed to reimburse at IRS rate of $.625.

Library (Todd): Books have not been getting checked out, how should we deal with them? Silent auction/ sales discussed.

General Meeting Minutes, October 17, 2022, Mt Baker Rock and Gem Club

Rock Club Auction:  The doors opened at 6:00 pm for members and guests to register for a number and to preview the items to be auctioned off.  The location was at the Pioneer Pavilion Community Center, 2007 Cherry St, Ferndale.

The meeting was called to order by President Candi Gerard. 

The minutes are approved from the September 19, 2022, general meeting.

Election:  The November meeting is the election of officers. 

Lapidary:  The Intro to Lapidary for October was cancelled.  There is an Intro class in November.  To sign up and information, please go to the Bellis Fair Mall retail store.

Holiday Party:  We are discussing whether to have a potluck, just desserts, or raffle desserts.  More information will be forthcoming.

Auction:  The auction commenced at 6:30 pm.  A big “thank you” to all of the auctioneers, Wes Gannaway, Sharon Geleynse, Gordy Gerard, and Michael Langley.

Donations:  Thank you to all that donated rocks and rock hobby related items.  The auction would not have been as successful without you!

Next Meeting:  The next general meeting will be November 21, 2022, 7:00 pm, at the Pioneer Pavilion Community Center, 2007 Cherry St, Ferndale.  There will be a presentation, “The Geology of Steamboat Rock State Park in Photos,” by Todd Folsom.  There will be no show and tell.

Board Meeting Minutes, October 3, 2022, Mt Baker Rock & Gem Club

The meeting was called to order by Candi at 6:15 pm, at Portal Creek Park Clubhouse, Ferndale.  Attending – Candi and Gordy Gerard, Wes and Deb Gannaway, Bonnie Keel, Sharon Geleynse, and Linda Mitchell.

Secretary’s Report:  The June 6, 2022, minutes were approved. 

Treasurer’s Report:  Deb reported on the expenses. 

Membership:  One new member.  There are 208 family memberships.

Federation:  Michael Langley attended the recent meeting in Hillsboro OR.   

 Washington State Mineral Council (WSMC):  No report.

Field Trip Committee:  Volunteers needed. 

Lapidary Report: 

To use the lapidary equipment, you must be a member and have attended the “Intro to Lap Room Class.” The October 18 class is full.  The next class will be November 15.  You must sign up and prepay in advance at the club’s retail store.

Open lapidary night is on Thursdays, 6-9 pm for members.  Cost is $10.  You must sign up one week in advance and prepay at the club’s retail store.  If no one signs up and prepays, the lapidary room will be closed.  We do not accept walk-ins.

Show 2023:  The flyers will be updated.  The scholarship information will be reviewed.

Mall Report:  It has been slow.

Old Business: 

The date for the next Rockhound Recycling Rendezvous (RRR) will be scheduled next October 2023.

There was a motion to change the name from the White Elephant Auction to the “Rock Club Auction.”  The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

New Business: 

The Christmas party was discussed.  It is planned to have a gift exchange and dessert auction.  This information will be brought to the membership at the October general meeting on October 17.

General Meeting Minutes, September 19, 2022, Mt Baker Rock & Gem Club

The meeting was called to order by Candi Gerard, 7 pm, at Pioneer Pavilion Community Center, 2007 Cherry St, Ferndale.  Candi welcomed everyone to the meeting.

Candi thanked everyone that showed up to help clean up the club sales rocks on August 28, 2022.

Secretary’s Report: The August 15, 2022, minutes were approved. 

Treasurer’s Report:  Deb reported on the bills. 

Membership:  There have been no new members this past month.  During the meeting tonight, there were 10 new members.

Federation:  The Federation show is September 30-October 2, in Hillsboro OR.  Michael plans on attending.  He will take pictures and post on the club’s Facebook page. 

Washington State Mineral Council (WSMC):  There is a field trip scheduled on October 15 to Money Creek.  November 12 is a field trip to Blanchard Mt for Stilpnomelane.  This field trip is in our local area.

 The October meeting will be our White Elephant Auction/Sale.  Doors open at 6 pm for registration and the auction begins at 6:30 pm, Pioneer Pavilion Community Center, 2007 Cherry St, Ferndale.  Members and guests invited.  Donations of rocks and rock hobby related items are needed.  Please bring your donations the night of the meeting.  The money from the auction goes towards a scholarship for a WWU student pursuing an earth science degree. 

The website will be changed from admin@mtbakerrockclub.org so the email will not look like a scam email.  More information will be forthcoming.

Voting for board members is in November.  Nominations are being taken for all board positions now!  We have a good time.  You will learn a lot.  The present board members have been doing this for many years and would like to have someone else take over the positions.  President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, 2 Directors-at-Large.

 The club informs members by email of meeting minutes, field trips, special events, and other information.  Please be sure to read your emails so you can stay informed about the club.  If you are not receiving your club emails, please let us know at admin@mtbakerrockclub.org.  Also, check your spam folder.

If you are looking for Christmas gifts, come to the club’s retail store in Bellis Fair Mall.  We sell jewelry, rocks, gems, and may other rock-related items.  We have gift certificates available as well.  There are showcases 2’x4’ for sale if you are interested.

General Meeting Minutes, August 15, 2022, Mt Baker Rock & Gem Club

New Business:  Glenn Ishihara recently moved to Hawaii.  Glenn was nominated for a Lifetime membership for his contributions to the club.  A motion was made to approve Glenn for a Lifetime membership, seconded, and passed unanimously.

 Old Business:

 Picnic and Potluck, August 28: Location is at Candi and Gordy Gerard’s, 1371 Paradise Rd, Ferndale.  Directions:  Take exit 262 off I-5.  At the McDonalds turn north on Barrett and follow road to Candi’s Jewelry Gallery on right.  About 1-11/2 miles from McDonalds. 

  • Picnic/potluck starts at 5 pm, and we will eat at 6 pm.
  • Please bring potluck dish and your own eating utensils (plate, fork, spoon, knife). You will also need to bring your own chairs and drinks. 
  • At noon, a work party will begin to cleanup, organize, and sort rocks. Volunteers are needed. 
  • At noon, you can bring your rocks and rock hobby related items to tailgate/sell/trade. You will need to also help out with the work party. 
  • If rain, the picnic will be cancelled.
  •  
  • There are lists at the front table for members to let us know their interests and what direction the club should focus on.

  • October 2023, the next Rockhound Rendezvous will be scheduled.

General Meeting Minutes, July 18, 2022, Mt Baker Rock & Gem Club

The meeting was called to order by Candi Gerard, 7 pm, at Pioneer Pavilion Community Center, 2007 Cherry St, Ferndale.  Candi welcomed everyone to the meeting. 

Secretary’s Report:  The June 20, 2022, minutes were approved.  There are flyers at the front table about upcoming shows and events.

Treasurer’s Report:  Deb gave a report of the bills. 

Membership:  There are 4 new members.

Federation:  The Federation show is September 30-October 2, in Hillsboro OR.

Washington State Mineral Council (WSMC):  Field trip July 23-24, Sweetwater for Travertine.

The WSMC has field trips for club members to attend.  Please check the WSMC website for the schedule and information about the field trips, where/when to meet.

  • For the September 19th meeting, Todd Folsom will give a presentation on Geology of Steamboat Rock State Park.

The picnic/potluck starts at 5 pm and we will eat at 6 pm.  Please bring potluck dish and your own eating utensils (plate, fork, spoon, knife).  You will also need to bring your own chairs and drinks.
