The book “Rockhounding Washington” by Lars W. Johnson describes site 32 as Canyon Creek for Eocene leaf fossils. This site is located in the Mt. Baker National Forest, east of Glacier in Whatcom County. The author describes coming to a fork off of Canyon Creek Road/ NF-31 where you should turn off to the right. Unfortunately that turnoff is now gated. There is room for several vehicles to park, but now you will have to walk uphill (220′ and 6/10 mile) to the quarry. GPS coordinates for the gated road are: 48 55′ 12.66″, -121 57′ 43.13″
There are multiple palm frond fossils in the quarry. These are too large for most of us to extract without ruining the fossil, so please take a photo and leave the fossil for others to enjoy. Below are some photos of palm and leaf fossils. Please note that there are many large rocks (like the circled boulder) ready to roll down on you, so be very careful.
