Racehorse Fossils site 2

Slide Mountain

Note well: April, 2026; this area is now blocked by a new gate! Look below for the subheading of April 2026.

This is where the Mineral Council led a collecting trip in spring of 2018. Its great advantage is that the site is right beside the road. Below are the directions and maps provided by the Mineral Council and my photos of the site. The photos should help you locate the right spot once you have driven the 1.4 miles from the last turn.

Summer, 2023: The dig sites are now quite overgrown with vegetation. There are a couple of small access areas as shown in the photo below. Some of the vegetation will die back over winter but you would still need to clear it away to reach more of the ledge. The road is in decent shape: corduroy bumps and minor potholing.

April, 2026: The road to this site is now blocked by a new gate. The gate is just beyond the fork on the N. Fork Road where you would turn right instead of going left over the bridge.
